A Simpler Alternative to Odoo for Small Businesses
Odoo is an open source ERP with a very wide range, and it is the stronger choice for manufacturing or for a company working with an implementation partner. If your business mostly runs clients, bookings, invoices, projects and stock, a simpler all-in-one with one client record may be easier to run. Pacten is one such option.
Who Odoo is genuinely good for
Odoo describes itself as a suite of open source business apps that cover all your company needs, and its homepage title calls it an "Open Source ERP and CRM". Its pricing page says the Standard and Custom plans include all apps for a single fee, among them Sales, eCommerce, Sign, Website, Accounting, CRM, Inventory, HR, Project and POS, "and many more".
Several things make it a strong choice for the right team:
- Production and operations. An ERP is the category built for production planning, bills of materials and work orders. If manufacturing is the heart of your business, Odoo is where to look, and a general business platform such as Pacten is not.
- A partner to lead the project. Odoo's pricing FAQ says larger companies work with a partner. If you have a partner and a budget for an implementation project, a broad ERP rewards that effort.
- Hosting and customisation. Odoo's Custom plan adds Odoo.sh or on-premise hosting, Studio, multi-company and an external API. Odoo also offers a community edition you can download. If you want to host it yourself or build on top of it, that matters.
- Support and hosting included. Odoo says all plans include unlimited support, hosting and maintenance.
- A way to start small. One App Free gives you one app with unlimited users.
If those describe you, Odoo is likely the better tool and this page is not trying to talk you out of it.
Why some small teams find it heavy
We have not measured how long Odoo takes to set up, and we will not repeat opinions found online. What can be read on Odoo's own pages points to where the weight sits.
Implementation is a project in its own right. Odoo's pricing page lists implementation as a service that is not included in the subscription. Its FAQ says companies under 50 employees usually work directly with Odoo using Success Packs, and its pricing-packs page has a project estimator. That is a sensible, transparent model. It is also a scoping exercise before you start.
Counting users takes a little thought. Per Odoo's FAQ, a paying user is anyone with backend access, or an HR employee record without a user. Portal customers and suppliers are free. Know who falls into which group before you compare quotes.
The price you see depends on where you are. Odoo's pricing page picks the currency by visitor location, and the yearly price shown carried a footnote saying the discount is valid for 12 months, for initial users ordered. Treat the yearly figure as a first-year number.
Breadth is a set of decisions. When every app is included, the work shifts to deciding which to turn on, in what order, and who owns each.
What Odoo costs on its list prices
A list price per user is not the cost of owning software. Implementation, add-ons, time and the number of people with backend access all change the total. These are Odoo's own list prices as of October 2026, read on 4 October 2026.
| Plan as shown | Billed yearly | Billed monthly |
|---|---|---|
| One App Free | CAD 0 (one app, unlimited users) | Not applicable |
| Standard | CAD 35.20 per user per month | 44.00 CAD per user per month |
| Custom | CAD 57.90 per user per month | 73.00 CAD per user per month |
These are Canadian dollar figures only. Odoo's page chooses currency by visitor location, we could read CAD only, and we have not verified US dollar or pound prices. The yearly figures are a first-year discount. Taxes are extra. Confirm on Odoo's pricing page before you decide.
What to look for in a simpler alternative
- One client record. Bookings, contracts, invoices and conversations should attach to the same client, not sit in separate modules you connect yourself. Our guide to all-in-one business software explains the difference.
- Setup that is scoped up front. You should know who does it and what it costs before you commit.
- Few decisions to start. Can you switch on what you need and leave the rest?
- Clear user counting. Know who needs a seat and what an occasional user costs.
- Honest limits. Ask the vendor what the product does not do. See all-in-one versus best-of-breed for how to weigh depth against joined-up data.
- The accounting boundary. Be clear on which system your accountant files from.
Where Pacten fits
Pacten is built around one client record, for service businesses and product businesses, first in the US, Canada and the UK. Bookings, contracts, invoices, projects, conversations and, for businesses that hold stock, products and suppliers attach to the same client.
In practice:
- A client books through a page that checks your real availability, and a booking for a priced service raises an invoice, with a deposit if you set one. See booking and invoicing software.
- Contracts are signed through a link the signer opens without an account.
- Projects, people records and time off sit beside the client work.
- Stock, suppliers, purchase orders and stock counts live in the same system.
- A double-entry ledger with bank reconciliation runs the business side of the money.
- Apps are enabled per workspace, so a team can start with a few.
Plans are priced per person, and the figures are on the pricing page. We would not ask you to choose on list price. Only the Starter plan has a 7-day trial, and a card is required. Setup and data migration are scoped and priced up front. See the integrations page for how the parts connect, and the guide to seeing everything in your business in one place.
| Odoo | Pacten | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Open source suite of apps, billed per user | One client record across connected apps, priced per person |
| Range | Very wide, including ERP modules | Narrower, by design |
| Setup | Implementation not included, Success Packs or a partner | Scoped and priced up front |
| Hosting | Hosted, with Odoo.sh or on-premise on the Custom plan | Hosted only |
| Tax and filing | Odoo lists its own Accounting app | Sits alongside your accounting software for VAT, sales tax and filing |
Where Pacten is not the better choice
- You manufacture. Pacten has no bills of materials, production scheduling or work orders. If you build products from components, use an ERP such as Odoo.
- You want to host it yourself or build on it. Pacten is hosted only, and it is not a development platform. Odoo's open source edition and Custom plan are aimed at exactly that.
- You have an implementation partner and a long project in mind. A broad ERP is built for that route, and a lighter system may feel thin to a team that wants to model everything.
- A point-of-sale setup or full online store is your core. Compare closely before you move.
- You file taxes from your business system. Pacten keeps the operational books and sits alongside accounting software for VAT, sales tax and filing. It does not replace it.
- You want the most users for the least money. Do not choose Pacten on list price. Work out your own total for both, including setup.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Odoo too complicated for a small business?
- It depends on the business. Odoo's own pages show that implementation is a separate service, so there is a project to scope. A team that wants the breadth, or manufacturing, can find that worthwhile. A team that mainly needs clients, bookings and invoices may prefer a smaller system.
- How much does Odoo cost?
- On Odoo's pricing page, read on 4 October 2026, Standard was listed at CAD 35.20 per user per month billed yearly, and Custom at CAD 57.90. These are list prices as of October 2026, in CAD only, and the yearly figures are a first-year discount. Implementation is extra.
- Is Pacten an ERP for manufacturers?
- No. Pacten has no bills of materials or production scheduling. If manufacturing is central to your business, look at an ERP such as Odoo.
- Does Pacten replace my accounting software?
- Usually not for filing. Pacten keeps a ledger for running the business and sits alongside accounting software for VAT, sales tax and tax filing. Check the pricing page for plans.
- How do I move from Odoo or from spreadsheets?
- Data migration is scoped and priced up front, and most teams move in stages, starting with clients and bookings. Contact us to talk through your data, or get started to see how it would look.
